Perspectives of a beautiful mind.
Ego and the demi god
Working in the music industry can be tiresome. I love music, but I have seen trends of people's mentalities, and that is what I find frustrating. Everyone wants to be a star. Everyone wants the attention. Metal bands typically are the worst. This blog will be an ego buster for many that read it, but good, that's the point. There is an electronic tissue attached at the bottom to help comfort your pain.
Ego: What is it? How does it help and how does it hurt. From my understanding our ego is a function of the mind that ensures our survival. It is what makes us want more and strive to grow and advance, but a run away ego is like a spoiled child. Working with famous musicians I see it is either black or white. Either the musicians ego is skyrocketed to a level where they believe they are a demi god. This is why the music industry is so dark. You have a bunch of people literally thinking they are sex idols or something other worthy of worship. The star is on stage and all of the followers are in the pit holding their hands high in the air worshiping the star in the heavens. It is easy to get wrapped up in it, and if you are not careful that's a path of destruction.
Now on the other hand we have musicians that are wildly successful because they are so controlled and humble. These are the easiest to be around. The personality attracts people like crazy, but typically these people are not the star. They possess a humble position that does not demand the spot light, such as the drummer or bassist. Singers and guitarists have to be ego driven because that is what the crowd demands, that is what the crowd wants, that is what it takes to be a star. But the bad thing is none of it matters. Its all an illusion of the individuals mind. For example: imagine a wildly popular metal band with 100,000 facebook fans. This band plays a show and there is 700 people at the venue. These 700 fans are screaming and praising with hands held high. The concert goes great and the show goes on. The star swells with pride because he has the praise, worship, and recognition he deserves. Now that you have a picture of his ego and how he is on top of the world, now imagine a wildly popular metal band with 10,000,000 facebook fans. Wow. Their concert turns out to bring 5,000 loyal fans ready to praise and worship. This creates an equal feeling of superiority and self worth, but in the end they both are feelings. A feeling is nothing more than an opinion.
Maybe I have a negative opinion because working in the music business really makes me not like playing music as much. But what I sincerely think that it is, is that being exposed to so many musicians I see the majority of musicians have the demi god opinion of themselves. No matter how popular or unpopular they are. The majority have uncontrollable egos that inflate their opinions of themselves and they want everyone to bask in their godly goodness.
Now that some truth has been spoken and the ego has suffered a minor blow (don't worry. It will heal itself and probably be even stronger in a week.) now you can wipe the tears away and sit in quiet reflection on you and your position in life. Are you a egotistical demi god that is spiraling out of control? Or are you the humble drummer that is eternally gracious and doesn't feel the need to demand the spotlight?
